I was given the opportunity to animate this table scene from the “we don’t talk about Bruno sequence”. This sequence was actually created differently from other sequences in that choreography was made before layout. During preproduction, a few of us got to help layout out by really roughly animating the whole choreography in 3d space. Layout then took our animation and explored shot angles and composition. The animation you see in the layout clip was a section of the 30+ second layout animation I did. The number of characters and complexity of everything made animating this quite challenging.
One of the things I really tried to focus on was the composition of all the characters throughout the scene. If you look at the comparison between the reference and the final render, I intentionally adjusted the timing of Camilo, Augustin, and Felix’s whole choreography to help keep them from overlapping with the other characters and looking cluttered. There was no choreography for Pepa and Isabela at the end so I brainstormed endlessly for a version where I could have them come in as the guys stepped back, and exit as the guys leaned forward to maintain clarity in the composition.
There wasn’t any clear choreography for the exit either so I explored a bit on that. I got a really good note to have Camilo exit in a more flourishing manner. You can see that adjustment between the first look blocking and the final animation. As with all animations from Disney, it’s always really important to find ways to add clarity, appeal, and exaggeration to the poses and timing. I focused on pushing this throughout the whole process of making the shot. Tech anim did an absolutely amazing job with the hair and clothes on this shot. I was absolutely blown away with how my shot looked like after they completed their pass on it.

Fun fact for animators-There were no constraints used to animate this shot.
