This is a carved wooden object that is teaching me about the dialogue between the artist and the piece, when it's realized, and how its being worked.
I gain a sense of the form and begin to see it through the surrounding material by feeling and prodding with my hands. I'll push in a spot and if it impedes my hand's movement, I'll cut it down until my hands move effortlessly over the form. This is when I Know that I have realized what is in my mind, through the connection of my hand and my subconscious, critical eye.
I have to be aware of how the wood is reacting to my carving, and if I don't listen, it'll split, break, or create an unfit texture. There has to be a back and forth conversation but wood cannot speak so you need to interpret how it responds to your work on it.
