Q&A: What's considered as proven COVID-19 vaccine side effects

백신 부작용 QnA
There is still a portion of the country unwilling to get inoculated due to safety concerns.
This raises questions about actual COVID-19 vaccine-related side effects... and why only a select few are receiving compensation.
Kim Do-yeon delves deeper to find out more

With safety of COVID-19 vaccines still a concern for some, the South Korean government has continued to expand its compensation criteria throughout the nation's vaccination rollout... to encourage more people to get vaccinated.
But... as of the end of last month, there were more than 330-thousand cases reported by people who had experienced adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines.
Of those... slightly more than 2-thousand were given compensation... 49 of them received medical fees.
So far, only two deaths have been recognized as vaccine-related.
But for an adverse reaction to be recognized as vaccine related... it has to be either anaphylaxis or blood clots from a virus vector vaccine.
This is because they have been statistically proven and are pathogenically related to COVID-19 vaccines.
Conditions that have been frequently named as a possible adverse reactions... such as heart inflammation and Guillain-Barre syndrome from mRNA vaccines... were only proven statistically but not medically.
That said, while the government hasn't officially recognized them as side effects... it has been providing medical fees if such symptoms appear soon after getting a vaccine shot.
But, that doesn't mean they will never be considered as being caused by the vaccine.
COVID-19 vaccines were only developed fairly recently, and most of them have been granted approval for emergency use.
So as the medical community gathers more data, if proven later on, symptoms can be officially recognized as a possible side effect later.
