‘Spate of Taliban victories’ in Afghanistan ‘particularly disturbing’ as armed forces flee

Afghanistan has seen a “recent spate of Taliban victories” in the country’s north amid reports United States troops withdrew from Bagram airbase without notice, according to Sky News contributor Michael Ware.

“Most particularly disturbing are a recent spate of Taliban victories across the country's northern provinces,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Those provinces in the north are not the traditional Taliban stronghold but now they completely dominate the place.”

Mr Ware said 1,000 soldiers fled across the northern border to Tajikistan to escape the Taliban on Monday, marking the “third wave of Afghani troops” leaving in about a week.

Mr Ware said there was a “unique cultural and warfighting environment” in Afghanistan where loyalties and allegiances can quickly be changed under duress.

“Often you’ll find Afghani security forces when they’re surrounded, they’re running out of ammo, there’s no chance of air support, no chance of extraction, no way to get out of there,” he said.

“In the Afghanistan way, particularly in the tribal way, they negotiate a surrender and switch sides.”
