After protracted debate, Minnesota Senate voted early on Saturday to include broad protections

WATCH: #BNNUS Reports.

After a protracted debate, the Minnesota Senate voted early Saturday to include extensive protections for abortion rights in state statutes, making it more difficult for future courts to reverse them.

In response to the United States Supreme Court's decision last summer to overturn Roe v. Wade, Democratic legislative leaders have prioritized the bill as one of their top priorities for the 2023 session.

Sponsors want to ensure that abortion rights are protected regardless of who sits on future courts, despite the fact that a 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court decision known as Doe v. Gomez held that the state constitution does.
