The 72nd day of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on Palma Island, which began on September 19, 2021.
New emission centers have appeared, which have opened in the northeastern sector of the cone, and the effusive flows emitted by them move in the northwestern direction. New centers located at a lower level exhibit effusive activity, while centers located at higher altitudes exhibit strombolian and phreatomagmatic activity.
This is the result of a new outburst of magma, which was probably caused by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake, the strongest since the beginning of the eruption. The earthquake occurred at 8:35 local time. The focus was located at a depth of 16 km. The epicenter was located 18 km from the Santa Cruz de la Palma area. The tremors were felt throughout the island.
In general, seismicity at intermediate depths has increased and continues to be localized in the same areas. At a depth of more than 30 km, it remains at a low level.
To date, the area of lava flows is more than 1,100 hectares (2,718 acres), more than 2,700 structures have been destroyed.
