It seems strange that Boris Johnson threw so much at getting Owen Paterson off the hook with the standards committee but then didn't even warn him that he was about to U-turn on the decision. The first act makes it sound like Johnson placed Paterson above the integrity of parliament, but the second that he didn't care about Paterson at all. The real reason may be that the action this week had more to do with shielding Boris Johnson than Owen Paterson.
