Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi announced a memorial for the farmers who died in the year-long protests against the controversial agriculture laws that the central government withdrew on Friday.
Channi said his government would decide on a site after consulting farmer unions. The move is seen as the Congress government’s attempt to take credit for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to withdraw the controversial laws.
Additionally, Channi demanded a compensation package from the central government for the 700 plus farmers who lost their lives during the protest and a law guaranteeing minimum support price for farmers tabled in the forthcoming winter session of Parliament.
