Teaching Students with Significant Reading Problems in the Context of MTSS

Students with or at-risk for significant reading problems should be taught in the context of MTSS with the goal of preventing reading problems. The first step is enhanced general education instruction, with supplemental intervention for students who struggle (Tier 2). For those students who show
intractability, intensive reading intervention (Tier 3) focused on component skills that have been difficult to acquire can be provided. The key is to make sure that every child is exposed to reading instruction that is sufficiently explicit, comprehensive, and differentiated to support the acquisition of
foundational skills within a language-rich learning environment. For children with dyslexia, many phonics-based approaches that include explicit instruction in accessing sublexical components of words are effective and there is no single prescription that must be followed.
