Strengthening the resilience in the informal market to build back better

The "Decent Work for Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Transformation in Mozambique" project, also known as #MozTrabalha, is an ILO initiative co-financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) in partnership with the Government of Mozambique.

Over the past year the project has worked intensively with local partners to support informal sector operators, vendors and micro/small enterprises in the peri-urban markets of Maputo, Boane and Vilankulos. Amid the COVID19 pandemic, more than 3.000 operators in markets have been heavily impacted by both the health and economic crisis, and for this #MozTrabalha has been providing a set of adaptive activities in support of the business continuity and occupational safety and health (OSH) conditions of work stations.

To ensure this, #MozTrabalha has partnered with #GAPI Investment Society – providing the much needed access to financial services that is allowing all operators to continue in their day to day business operations, whilst interacting safely with all their clients.
The initiative is already showing solid results in regard to reducing COVID-19 impacts on business continuity and safety, and is being implemented in the markets of Xiquelene (Maputo), Umpala (Boane) and Mercado Novo (Vilankulos).

Operators are now regularly benefitting from a number of services such as:
- Access to finance: ensuring facilitated access to capital that will reduce the interruptions to business continuity
- Business Development Services (BDS) training and coaching services: aimed at further supporting the financial planning and business structuring to improve the business and increase profit
- Increased access to information on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) conditions at work stations and within the markets
This initiative is currently delivering and contributing to further boost decent employment opportunities for all peri-urban market actors, with a specific focus on targeting women and youth operators.
