Is it OK to mix different inhalers containing similar medication?

Does it help to mix different inhalers which contain similar medication? Many combination inhalers such as Symbicort, Seretide, Foster (Fostair) etc. contain relatively similar medications with only minor differences in effect. Using more than one type of the same kind of inhaler may not actually give you more benefit, while increasing the total number of medications you are taking. Instead of taking two medications (contained in one inhaler) you would be taking four - and two of each doing more or less the same thing.

The logical approach is to discuss with your doctor and first see if your inhaler technique is correct and optimal, then to see whether you are on the right inhaler for the right diagnosis, if you are taking the correct dose. Only once you work through these potential problems should you consider (together with your doctor) to add another inhaler to your treatment mix.
