We always recommend buying swatches of a tartan you are interested in if you are unsure about which mill's rendition you will prefer.
Each tartan mill in Scotland tries to put their own slight spin on thread color. That's the main reason to invest in swatches before you shell out hundreds of dollars for custom 8-yard kilt.
But does the thread count used by the mill matter also?
Not a lot, actually. In this video, Rocky explains why and Erik provides some analogies to illustrate the point.
Essentially, thread count is a tool -- an ancient tool to help preserve a record of how a tartan looks. It's all about proportion. This code is very important for written records, but when it comes to actually weaving cloth....well, watch the video and you'll see.
