Imagine if you could plug yourself into a machine that would bring you ultimate pleasure for the rest of your life. The only catch? You have to rise above the reality you currently know and feel.
The wisdom of Kabbalah discusses the ever-growing desire for unlimited fulfillment in us that causes all our suffering, as we constantly and incessantly want more and more, and as a result, we destroy the planet and each other.
This desire drives all of us to a state where we can reach complete and eternal fulfillment. Knowingly, unknowingly we all want to be eternally fulfilled with pleasure. But do we even know what this “eternal pleasure” means?
Eternal and continuous pleasure comes from wholeness, i.e., connecting ourselves to a pleasure that is not limited in any way. It is a pleasure we crave to but we do not yet know. This is the trick of creation that nature designed for us.
Any concept of pleasure we have comes from our transient, fleeting material, and physical experiences. They are like little moments of ecstasy that disappear a moment after they come. This is true regarding any pleasures we can imagine or chase right now. Psychologists call it treading the “hedonic treadmill.”
The kind of pleasure we truly want is totally different. It is a pleasure from belonging to the eternity of nature, being part of a perfect system, from endlessly sensing the wholeness, tranquility, and love in that system. We cannot conceive this pleasure from our material experiences, and we cannot compare them to anything we know in this world. We are talking about a completely different dimension.
Thus, in the development of human desire, we have to change direction in relation to how we fulfill our desires. Instead of the direct selfish fulfillment we are used to, which gives us our limited fulfillment, we have to switch to fulfilling our desires through giving. It is completely different from how we relate to love and giving in our current lives. Through such love, “true love,” we will receive perfection, wholeness, infinite fulfillment.
