Recent unrest brings back sad memories for workers of Magwa Tea Estates

The scenes of unrest that took place in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in the past two weeks have brought back rather sad memories for workers of Magwa Tea Estates in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. The workers embarked on a strike in 2010 and 2011 which later turned violent.
They were demanding salary increases. Some of the striking workers burnt company property and private vehicles while others looted. They lost their jobs and spent close to two years with no income. Fundiswa Mhlekude has filed this report.
