Michelle Steele talks about why COVID-19 vaccines are important in an outbreak

In this video, Michelle Steele, a Kamilaroi Gomeroi woman working in the Department of Health, explains the importance of COVID-19 vaccines in an outbreak setting.

Transcript:
Hi, I’m Michelle Steele, a Kamilaroi Gomeroi woman from Moree in North West NSW. I am the Assistant Secretary for the Indigenous and Remote Policy and Implementation branch on the National COVID Vaccine Taskforce.

Today I am going to update you on the latest advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).

In the context of the current risk of COVID-19 in NSW all adults in Greater Sydney should strongly consider the benefits of earlier protection with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca rather than waiting for alternative.

This is because the risks of getting very sick from COVID-19 Delta strain is much higher than the small risk of experiencing rare side effects from the vaccine. You should talk to your doctor about what is right for you.

In addition, people in areas where outbreaks are occurring can receive the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose, rather than the usual 12 weeks. This is to bring forward optimal protection.

So, if you have had your first dose of AstraZeneca four weeks ago, you should arrange your second dose as soon as possible.

We have increased access points for vaccination in Greater Sydney, bringing onboard more pharmacies this week and next week who can administer the AstraZeneca vaccine.

This means you have more opportunities to get vaccinated in your local communities, through ACCHS, GPs and now community pharmacies.

Thank you for staying safe and getting vaccinated when you are able to.
