The World Cup 2021 is one of the biggest event in the chess calendar. Top two finishers get an entry into Candidates 2022. Some of the best players in the world are competing including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caaruana, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri and others. In the women section we have Goryachkina heading the line-up along with Lagno, Muzychuk sisters. A total of 206 players in open with a prize fund of US$18,92,000 and 103 players in the women section with a prize fund of US$676,250.

This is a classical event with a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the remaining moves and an increment of 30 seconds from move 1. The format is knockout. In case of 1-1 draw in classical chess (day 1 and day 2), then we move into the tiebreak which consists of rapid and blitz games on day 3.

The Indian challenge consists of 12 players. 8 in the open and 4 in the women. After the 3rd round 9 players have been eliminated and 3 still remain.

Vidit Gujrathi (2726) vs Jeffery Xiong (2709)
Praggnanandhaa (2608) vs. GM Maxime Vachier Lagrave (2749)
